Probably this talks about some mountain dweller with an amount of fantasy which won’t be found in any document? #plesse #hesse #burg #germany□□ #german #folktales #folkbelief #grimms #sagen #dwarffortress #dwarf #hilltribes The story is found in the family book of Johannes Letzner, a 16th century German historian and theologist who belonged to a noble family here. From that time onwards we have documents telling about hereditary feudal rulers of the region – but these castle owners are obviously not the topic of the story. A 12th century castle of an aristocratic family in this area still exists. *Plesse is in Bovenden area of Lower Saxony, The name of village Bovenden is found first in a deed of year 949. Probably that was reason a nearby inn was called zum Rauschenwasser (towards the noisy water). The main entrance of their homes was in the deep wells. Sometimes they appeared before humans, took them to netherworld and gave them precious gifts if they liked those humans. Those hill tribes were of flesh and bone like other people did father children and die, however they had the special ability of making themselves invisible and walking through rocks and walls just as easily as one can through the air. If they wanted to appear out on the ground for some or other reason, they did their business not during the day, but at night. Inside their dwellings, they had rooms and apartments full of gold and precious stones. Actually these subterranean people did not have close association with humans. If they suffered from some or other trouble, they did not show their rage out on humans, but took revenge on the cattle that bothered them. They were quiet and benevolent tried to help the people they liked. According to many legends, there were homes of those who are called the “silent people”. In the mountain-castle of Plesse in Hesse, there are numerous springs, fountains, gorges and caves where dwarfs are believed to have lived. Illustration of Burg Plesse in 1850 from Wikipedia.
